Being a Brit, I've never really understood thanksgiving. What is it you crazy Americans are celebrating?

I see thanksgiving as a celebration of being alive, being thankful for the things you do have.
If I remember correctly it started as a farmer's celebration, thanking for a good harvest.
We don't celebrate it here either, but in my opinion, every day should be our personal thanksgiving for still being alive.
oh.. and happy thanksgiving to all of you!

Basically giving thanks once a year, family getting together and having a great day with a big turkey dinner with pumpkin pie, apple pie, stuffing, and all the fixings.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year! It's the first major holiday and when you are away from family for school or work or whatever, it's nice to have a reason to come home.
It's on a Thursday every year, so most people mentally check out Monday afternoon. hehehe. Football. It's the beginning of the holiday shopping season.....though i don't really subscribe to the idea that people have to buy each other shit to show they care, most people do shop because they care and that's important and since we Americans are super consumers, our economy depends on people going out and spending! my broke ass always enjoyed that part of it on the sidelines though. i don't ever remember when i felt i had enough money to go shopping.
it's the most universal celebration of being grateful! there's no politics because it doesn't belong to any one religion.
i guess the older i get, the more i enjoy the transparent face value of it. it's as deep or as superficial as you make it to be.

Quick question. Do the 'native Indians' celebrate Thanksgiving too?
We were taught that the original thanksgiving was between the pilgrims and the Indians because they taught the pilgrims how to plant and harvest crops.
If memory serves the Indians were 'paid back' with smallpox that decimated them in their thousands.
Not trying to be obtuse to you guys on your special holiday, just interested.
