Alot of great art (which I include music, literature and cinema) is motivated by pain.
Now, I have had a few discussions where people comment that alot of music (music is the best example here) is so depressing and that alot of artists have no real reason to complain because they're relatively rich, especially compared to the people in 3rd world countries.
So what's your stance on this? I would like to have a heated but civilized discussion.:)

Good thread Valk. I'll join in later on, now I must dash off.

Don't get crossed if you get the odd wishy-washy remark.

Strong feelings are a very common reason for someone to really start thinking and expressing him/herself deeply & seriously. Sadly the most common strong feeling is sadness, because we all have to deal with difficult things in life like death of loved ones etc... happiness is something that doesn't appear in our lives as surely as sadness does. Negative or positive feelings put things in perspective, otherwise nothing would trigger strong enough feelings that could be directed to art, music and so on... A good example is music: most of the songs out there deal with love or sadness... mostly about strong feelings.
