Yes, but you can buy female condoms that are inserted in the vagina and cover the pussy area. Usually they don't combine with male condoms because of the components in them.
I know it does exist but I never saw it in any shop.

As for condoms, they protect against the skin they cover. You can get cold sores on any part of your body. Check out poeple with cold sores - normally on the sides of thier lip. The lip is an easy infection point cos it is often cracked and is also a thin membrane through which the HSV enters easily.

Realistically there is no such thing as perfectly risk-free sex, but I would not do unprotected sex until I trusted the girl was STD free, regardless of how unsatifying smaller penises wrapped in latex can be.
