I am killing the scientist's workout log with BJJ talk so I am opening up an MMA / Grappling thread because I know several of us out there love this stuff
Myself
2 years Judo
1.5 years BJJ
1.5 years Submission grappling
What I think is one of the sickest submissions ever. Kids you may never see a wizzer like this turned into an armbar/omoplatta

Speaking of omplata's have you ever actually seen one landed in mma? I'd imagine there were some back in the day in PRIDE because they allowed the use of gi's but I've still never seen one, in PRIDE, UFC or anywhere.
Without the gi, it seems like it would be too hard to lock up and too easy to roll out of.

I miss pride too, Bas was is my favorite commentator of any sport, and Fedor is my favorite fighter.
I also, agree with Bas about the music, that's the song that I wake up to every morning. Makes me feel sort of like a hardass, if I've had enough sleep, and I'm still sore from yesterday.

Two big fights coming up
Georges St. Pierre versus BJ Penn
Fedor Emelianko versus Andre Arlovski
Who is watching and who you think will win?
My vote is
GSP by knockout via ground and pound
Fedor by arm lock
The_Scientist
23rd January 2009, 03:04 PM
Fedor vs. Arlovski is a heartbreaker for me because I like them both alot. I've named Fedor provisionally my favorite fighter just because I like his personality it seems to be alot like mine, and he is so fucking good at most everything. I like Arlovski, because he was my favorite heavyweight in the UFC. I also like him because he's being trained by Freddy Roach who is my favorite person associated with the sport of boxing. I mean, how many guys do you know that have parkinson's disease that have knocked someone out in Lowe's for calling them a retard? 'Nuf said.
But I agree Fedor by armbar, or maybe decision. The thing is, I don't see Arlovski taking Fedor down, but I do see Fedor taking Arlovski down from the clinch, and landing on top. From there, Fedor will probably Ground and Pound in his guard, but I don't see Arlovski getting knocked out from there, so probably decision.
As far as Penn vs. GSP. I also agreed with you at first glance, but I think it's be hard to GNP Penn, because word has it he's really good at Jiu Jitsu, admittedly I've only seen a couple of his fights, but it seems to be commong knowledge that he's just made for Jiu Jitsu, he got his black belt in like three years, for fucks sake. On the other hand, he's smaller than GSP so GSP might be able to hold him down long enough to unleash some, blows but I don't see him getting mount. My prediction GSP by knockout, or a cut from an elbow from Penn's guard.
Baseballer8
24th January 2009, 02:55 AM
Penn is a step above most anyone with Jits. There are black belts and then there are the elite blacks, and penn is elite no doubt. However I defer my comments to the GSP vs Matt Serra fight. Serra is a legit black belt but that was worthless against GSP's attack. His guard was pointless, and the only time he could stop GSP from mounting was establishing lockdown from half guard but then GSP rained down hell anyways.
The_Scientist
25th January 2009, 03:29 AM
I agree with you for the most part. I don't think he'll get mount because while Serra is great at jiu jitsu, Penn is made for it. He has jiu jitsu in his DNA or something, also he has crazy legs and flexibility, so reclaiming guard might be easier.
Either way, I think we agree for the most part. GSP by ground and pound. Only you think it will come via knockout, but I don't see him getting into a dominant enough position to reign down enough blows for the ref to stop it. The ref's seem to stop fights based on position and the volume of blows. A fighter can raise up in someones guard and hit him with amazing power, but the ref won't stop it, but if a fighter can get mount and rain down blows that don't do much but are in volume the fight will be stopped quickly.
So, I don't think he'll get to mount so no KO by GNP, but he will beat the shit out of Penn while in his guard because of size, and wrestling ability. And I think he land some hard elbows from there, David Loiseau style, and get a cut that might finish it. But I think gaining mount and doing something with it against Penn is a mountain of a task.

Affliction is over, and frankly I am disappointed. Fedor wins by what looks like luck. I had Andre winning and in control, while Fedor looked sloppy and dare I say fat. Had Andre been smart he could have won round 1.
I was impressed by Babalu and that anaconda was sweat. I think Thierry needs a new camp and for a Judo black belt he doesn't know jack about newaza.
Buentello was boring to watch and seriously I felt bad for his opponent because at any time that Buentello decide not to jab it was over.
Vitor was really explosive and it was scary watching Linland twitch on the mat for a good couple of minutes.
Barnett was blah he took way too long to finish off Gilbert. He had no problem take mount so he should have tried to do more. I was bored but it was a successful game plan.
Sad thing is Affliction will probably go bottom up after this. The production quality was crappy. The camera coordinator sucked and it took forever to get a replay. One time Barnett was going for a kimora and they change angles away from the arms to show his ass. Tito sucks dick as an announcer and his huge head is just annoying. They had Bas Rutten on the pay role and didn't use him for the main card, only the under card. They also had some secondary interviewer who looked like and sounded like Steve-O's lost twin only a little more fucked up.
The_Scientist

No spoiler alert? :shrugs:
Oh well, I would have read it anyway. Fucking college, I can't order PPV, sucks. Fedor always looks fat, and compared to Arlovski I bet he would look even fatter. Sad to hear it was a shitty fight. I miss pride, and dislike Dana White, I appreciate all he's done for the sport and understand that he has to have the business aspect in mind, but I'm just a fan and not considering business is a luxury I have, and his crazy contracts upset me. I wish fedor was in the UFC, though I must say I think I like watching matches in the ring more, I think it might just be because it looks bigger, but I like feeling that the fighters can move around alot more.
Baseballer8
25th January 2009, 03:56 AM
Yeah sorry about that, had to vent some how :shrugs:
Fedor looked human, it should be up soon on youtube and the likes. I just wish Affliction was smarter, because if it were then we would have two legit organizations, but the moves they are making are just retarded. They spend so much money in the wrong places and even with a fight card that stacked had trouble selling tickets. Their marketing was horrible.
Ask someone what MMA is and they will say "Huh?"
Ask them what UFC is and they know what you are talking about.
Really the only legit MMA organizations that are top level in the world right now are UFC, DREAM, and Affliction a floundering third. If anything is to assume what PrideFC was it will be Dream

25th January 2009, 04:51 AM
Wow, that was not a very good fight.
I forgot how fast Arlovski's hands were, have you seen the fight when he knocked out Buentello with a punch so fast I couldn't see it until I slowed it down on my computer.
I don't know what that was, but I agree Arlovski was winning the striking until whatever the fuck that was happened. I wish I could see like an alternate version of the fight, in which that punch doesn't land, or rather doesn't knock him out.
Baseballer8
25th January 2009, 05:00 AM
Arlovski was trying for a flying knee and ends up looking like a beached whale. If you notice though he got lucky he fell so fast because Fedor was ready to catch him with the left on the way down.
My question is why would Arlovski want to get inside on Fedor, where Fedor had the advantage. I know he was going for a fight ending knee there but still he was winning from the outside. Fedor is not someone you are going to knock out.
The_Scientist
25th January 2009, 05:05 AM
IDK, if I had hands, that fast and heavy and his physical ability. I'd push the fight keep super active, so that you build a lead on the cards, and maybe push Fedor's cardio ,though I think it's usually pretty good he did look rusty, and make him come to you then step back and step into some straight rights, or some short combo's with power.
Maybe he wanted to attack while he had the oppurtunity and felt like he had the advantage. That's the only thing I can guess.

For some reason I could really care less about the WEC card sunday night.
Varner v Cerrone
Faber v Pulver
The first one might be an okay fight.
The second especially with Jens having a short and inadequate camp is going to be Faber all the way. Really I feel they are feeding Faber this one. They knew Jens wasn't going to be ready so there was little chance of having a match like the first time they met.

UFC 94: JANUARY 31, 2009
venue: MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada
Main Card Bouts:
-Georges St. Pierre (#1 Welterweight in the World)* vs. B.J. Penn (#2 Lightweight in the World)*
-Lyoto Machida (#4 Light Heavyweight in the World)* vs. Thiago Silva (#10 Light Heavyweight in the World)*
-Karo Parisyan (#10 Welterweight in the World)* vs. Dong Hyun Kim
-Nathan Diaz vs. Clay Guida
-Stephan Bonnar vs. Jon Jones
Preliminary Bouts:
-Jon Fitch (#2 Welterweight in the World)* vs. Akihiro Gono
-Jake O'Brien vs. Christian Wellisch
-Chris Wilson vs. John Howard
-Manny Gamburyan vs. Thiago Tavares
-Matt Arroyo vs. Dan Cramer
SO how is Bonnar who in my opinion hasn't done diddly since his stint on The Ultimate Fighter on the main card, while Jon Fitch is on the undercard?
I predict
GSP - knockdown to GNP TKO
Machida by unanimous decision
Karo by boring ass decision with some judo throws
Guida by caveman flurry
Jones because I don't like Bonnar
Fitch by whatever he wants
From here on out I don't know enough about the fighters to comment.

I agree with all of that, except the Jon Fitch, because I've never seen him fight. It's sort of funny because after Bonnar/Griffin, they both got contracts, and Griffin went on to be a champion and one of the best loved fighters in the UFC today, and I didn't even know Bonnar was still in the UFC until today. I used to think about what happened to him, but that he would still be fighting on main cards was never really an option in my mind.

fitch is not on the main card because he doesnt finish fights. Hence he is perceived as a unexiting fighter.
i predict winners in red
bonnar has been injured several times so he hasnt grown in popularity as much.
im praying lyoto loses, hes boring as hell even thought he may be the best lhw in the world right now...or close to.
Nate diaz will sub clay. Nates Jui jitsu is sick.
i think GSP has grown so much as a fighter compared to bj "vampire" penn. I hope he finished Penn but i know this will go into decision.

Scientist I watched the big event on a live internet stream. The quality wasn't perfect but good enough to see what was going on. In fact I haven't payed for a PPV since Pierre KO'd Serra, not because I don't want to support it, but because PPV was unavailable. Damn well better know I will be watching a stream this Saturday.
Honestly though I don't think Fedor was ever rocked. He was taking shots but more so just looked frustrated that he wasn't doing damage himself. He knew he was being out pointed but I never saw the wobble people are talking about. He really just seemed to be rolling with it and absorbing. You can see during his counter punch that he was all there in the seconds before the KO.
I wish Arlovski would have stuck to his game plan because it would have been a real tactical match.
The_Scientist
27th January 2009, 02:01 AM
Yeah, I agree. I don't think Fedor was hurt, I think he was just frustrated because he new he was losing. Even then I don't think he was frustrated Fedor is a very patient fighter and I think if it had gone to other rounds he would have found a way to pull it out, my guess is he would realize that standing with Arlovski was basically a losing proposition and taken him down.

Jiu-Jitsu loses its icon
It is with great sadness that GRACIEMAG.com announces the passing of Grandmaster Helio Gracie. At 95 years of age, the great icon and one of those most responsible for Jiu-Jitsu’s success in Brazil and the world died this morning, at Beneficencia Portuguesa Hospital, in Petropolis, mountain region of Rio de Janeiro.
“I created a flag from the sport’s dignity. I oversee the name of my family with affection, steady nerves and blood,” said the Professor, as his last worlds.
The Master will be buried this Thursday afternoon, at 5 pm, at the Chapel of the Petropolis municipal cemetery.
Helio Gracie’s last public appearance occurred in December of last year, during a belt-promotion ceremony held by Gracie Humaita at the Guanabara Yacht Club.
In October, Helio Gracie celebrated his 95th birthday at the Gracie Humaita academy, in Rio de Janeiro. Click here to see how the party went.
In one of his most famous interviews, published in the special 100th issue of GRACIEMAG, the professor had declared: “I’ve already told my sons that when I die I want there to be a party. No drinking, no debauchery.”
All workers at Gracie Publishing, the company responsible for GRACIEMAG, NOCAUTE and GRACIEMAG.com are in mourning and express their condolences and sadness to the bereaved family, his wife Vera, sons Rorion, Relson, Rickson, Rolker, Royler, Royce, Rherica, Robin and Ricci.
We will be back with more information shortly.

Well those of you who missed the fights can probably watch them on Spike as reruns, but honestly I wouldn't make too much of an effort to do it. It was a free card and was put on in London England, so hardly any of the big names were there and it was more of a PR thing for MMA in Europe. Lots of promising young European fighters but no stars yet. I think the reason for this event was to psyche up the European crowd for the next The Ultimate Fighter series which pits the US versus UK, Henderson vs Bisping.
DAMN I CALLED THE MAIA FIGHT PERFECTLY
Maia is sick, but really he is almost doing too good for his own good. He is so electric to watch but really is hugely one dimensional. He has hardly and semblance of striking and against a good boxer and wrestler combo, he may end up knocked out on the mat. To here people say he ought to be getting a title shot is premature I believe. He may have phenomenal jits but lets not forget that Anderson Silva is not only the top MMA striker but also a Noguiera black belt. Sad thing for Maia is he has Wandy as one of his training partners and I have a feeling Maia will adopt his style of striking, which can surprise some people and get knock outs, but in MMA today is antiquated.
Watch Grove and Ciesnolevicz if you want to see a knee explode from an inverted heel hook. Talk about bad form to get himself there too.
The_Scientist
23rd February 2009, 07:40 PM
I agree about wandy's style especially against someone like Anderson Silva who has silky smooth muay thai. On the other hand if you swarm him, you might be able to catch him. I wouldn't suggest for Maia to stand at all though, just don't get knocked out and take it to the ground, and work from the top. Silva's a black belt in BJJ so he probably won't get submitted, but being on top counts for a lot pointswise in MMA. It would probably make for a boring fight, but that's his best bet I think.
Baseballer8
23rd February 2009, 08:08 PM
Honestly this isn't the MMA where you can have no striking and just drag it to the ground a la Royce Gracie. Your striking must at least be competent or you get dominated, and it is almost impossible to set up takedowns without decent striking. I honestly don't see how Maia would win that fight. If he stands and bangs or can't get the takedown then he is KO'ed. If he takes it down but is in guard, he gets GNP'ed. If he is on top then Silva regains guard and body triangles till they are stood up.

Thing is that even if Maia pulls guard on Anderson which has a decent chance to happen, Anderson has too much know how to avoid the submissions and have it stood back up.
I really want to see Rampage pull this one off, because as awesome of a fighter as he is, a loss here really knocks hit off the charts. Not that UFC would cut him, but I don't want to see him become a feeder for new fighters or a gatekeeper like Fitch and Guida

Pete Sell vs. Matt Brown ??? Matt brown? I really don't know on this one. Both JJ guys. Pete Sell is with Matt Serra and Brown is with Gurgel I believe. I think Sell is more experienced but I like Gurgels style more, but that might just be due to my limited exposure to sport Jiu Jitsu. Earlier today I thought Sell now I don't really know.

This is an odd question, but what is your favorite mount escape?
I know a few but none that work consistently, bridging sucks for me right now, hip escape sucks because everyone I roll with has a really tight mount. Sometime I can use them in conjunction, use a bridge to get a hip escape. There is one that involves basically pulling your opponents foot over yours and escaping to half guard, and I gave up on that one, because I always started to get it, then got tapped, but my defense has gotten immensely better since then, so maybe I should go back to trying that one.
What's your favorite?
The_Scientist
6th March 2009, 03:50 AM
Avoiding the mount does not count.
Baseballer8
6th March 2009, 08:54 PM
Hmm personally I use a combination of moves. First I shrimp up to get their mount around my hips instead of up on the chest. Then I will press a knee down and try to get half guard. Most of the time they are keen to that and defend, but leave their arm open on the other side to be trapped. Once the arm is trapped I bridge and roll back to guard. Sometimes if I am adventurous I will let them grab the arm bar from mount roll and stack them after they go for it. This is only good if you keep your elbow low otherwise you will be tapping. I will cycle all of these as necessary. I prefer to end in half guard because 90% of the time I can sweep from half to side control using either Old Skool or Plan B sweeps (From Eddie Bravo)
FYI Last practice one of my boys tried to go for an arm bar but I was keen to it and ended up catching the ankle as he went for a triangle from mount. 10 secs later he was tapping to an ankle lock :cool
PS I really try not to use leglocks since they are dick/unfair moves in most cases

I ought to choke you for saying that Marcelo's game isn't tight and technical
He has the tightest and most technical game out there, but he is just on such another level than the rest of the competition that it looks so fluid. Watch his transitions, they may look explosive or wild but the precision placement of each limb is astonishing. His body control is top notch to the point of making his opponent worthless on the ground.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AY8JlJZBgCk
Look at his moves everyone is quick but calculated. There is never an oh shit what now moment, rather a smooth progression.
The_Scientist
5th April 2009, 03:19 AM
That's the exact opposite of what I meant. Everyone knows that Marcelo has the the tightest most technical game out there. What I meant is that he uses alot of open guard more than closed so that alot of people don't think it will transition well to MMA because people can punch or step out, and he won't really have gi to hold on to them.
PSSHHH!!!!
I even said this, "from what I've seen of him he seems to be very loose/open not in bad way as in not tight/technical, because it is it's just not like a closed guard."

Armbar?
Did you mean Arm Triangle?
I <3 Arm Triangles, and north-south chokes, because no one ever thinks to defend them. From side-control, using the Kimura to set up the North South choke was probably the first really effective offensive setup that I learned.
And yeah that was total domination by Jacare, it's hard to tell how good he is from that video though, because I don't know how good the other guy is, but yeah that was ridiculously one sided.

Lately I have been working the D'arce. Seriously it is a move that is open so often but people never take advantage of it. I like nailing it from side but have nailed it by shooting under a guy who was passing my full guard with the knee over pass.
Baseballer8
5th April 2009, 04:17 AM
Can you explain the transition from side control kimura to NS choke?
I always go knee on belly to either finish the kimura or at least get mount.
The_Scientist
5th April 2009, 04:21 AM
Yeah, I saw him moving his leg while in mount and I was like no way he is not going to. Are you sure that's not an Arm Triangle what the fuck is it then, in the first video? Also, damn your Judo terms, I don't know Japanese. :shrugs:
I've actually never used a D'arce I don't really know what it is. I got caught in one once which resulted in me getting really dizzy because he had me in it and I just kept rotating towards him to keep the pressure off of my neck and so we must have gone in about 5 circles before he got it and between the spinning and the choking I got up and the room was spinning.
The_Scientist
5th April 2009, 04:27 AM
Yeah, so you're in side control and you grab his wrist with your right hand to finish the Kimura and it's immediately obvious what you're going for, so they will fight the hell out of it. So, while you've got their wrist in your right hand they're not thinking about their neck. So take your left arm, and pass it under their neck and scoot to North-South, lock your hands and choke. Also, because of the setup I can usually get it with no arms in, so it's really really tight.
I'm not sure how clear that was, if you don't understand anything just tell me. It's more of a setup, but it works beautifully. It's my bread and butter once I get to side control, I had a hard time tapping people once I got there, because the only thing I knew was the kimura, and alot of the people that I roll with are really strong and I don't really like to force things, but with the addition of the north-south choke I usually get taps from there instead of just holding the position/trying the kimura until the round is over. :cool
Baseballer8
5th April 2009, 04:32 AM
Kata Gatame = Arm triangle (strangulation)
What Jacare did was hook his left foot under the left armpit but his leg was over the opponents bicep. His right leg then went to the opponents left shoulder. At that point the opponent was locked in and Jacare extended his hips putting torque on the elbow. You can see the arm hyperextended and hear the scream of pain as it was fast.
The D'arce is fun because if you really nail it, then it is instantaneous, but if it is loose you can slowly tighten it up and the gradual pressure normally ends in the opponent passing out :cool
The anaconda which is slightly different is pure slow strangulation and sucks to be caught in, because you know there is little you can do to escape but there seems like enough air to keep fighting and then the room goes black.

In that Marcelo video he does a sick half guard sweep which almost looks like a calf cutter setup. Basically he puts his shin behind the opponents knee and pulls that foot towards him while sitting up. I know there has to be so much more to it, but he makes it look so sweet. Maybe in the upcoming months I will start some of the butterfly and x-guard stuff. The sweeps seem effortless, then again its Marcelo everything is effortless :icon_rolleyes:

Also, yeah I just looked at the D'arce and it looks great. The setup that I just saw came from a sprawl which I could use alot, because we start from our knees which is great for not getting injured, but I have no idea how to wrestle with someone for dominant position from the knees, but I do end up in that position alot.

That's true, I saw my instructor using x-guard once and I actually never really thought much of it until I saw him use it and yeah he made it look so simple/effective/easy it was ridiculous. I'm also a butterfly guard fan just because I think it fits my body better because I can't even get a closed guard on most of the guys that I roll with because of my short legs. :shrugs: And if you're going to use butterfly guard then x-guard goes along with it.
I think that's my favorite thing about BJJ as opposed to most other martial arts, you're encouraged to make your own game based on what you like/your style. It's good to know everything, but I'm not going to have the same style as some guy that's 6'6 and lanky as hell.

Anderson weakness is BJJ. He is so good at the rest the weaker spot he has even with a Black belt is his ground game. If anyone is going to beat him it has to be by submission. He is not dumb about this, hes been training with Jacare for his next fight against leites this month. SO he is getting better at his "weakness". If maia has a good chin he will not disappoint and may be able to get it to the ground and win. I think A.S. KOs him.

Serra has good jits. His problem is that once he gets punched once he is a brown belt, twice a blue, and any more than that and he isn't much of a threat on the ground, as evidenced by GSP
It takes a special character to grapple well even when getting punched. Some that come to mind Rickson, Big Nog, and Fedor (though he calls is Sambo  )
Even the likes of Aoki and Immanari are noticeably lacking it they are taking some shots.

See I don't know why Leites even got this fight. He doesn't have the takedown ability to bring this fight to the ground, and his standup is pathetic compared to Silva. After the first round they are going to be searching for Leites head in the fourth or fifth row.
I don't think Silva will lose by submission. The Nogs don't give out Mc Black belts, so I believe its legit jits but he just hasn't had to use it. I personally think it will be a good wrestler that will pound him out. Hendo was winning till he got stupid. If he didn't worship his right fist and took the long slow lay and smother approach that fight was his. He choose to stand got hurt and Silva capitalized and choked him out.

I've noticed the exact same thing. BB8.
It's alot of the reason why alot of the people in my high school thought that all people that did BJJ were pussies. It's not that at all, it's just that alot of people don't train for it and use it like that. And yeah I agree a special sort of person to not care that they're getting punched in the face and try to sink an armbar instead of protect themselves, I would like to believe that I'm like that, but I have no idea because I've never been in that situation, someday though I would like to find out.
Also, in my opinion Gi is different from No gi which is different from MMA groundfighting. I think that the quicker people realize it the better off they will be.

rewatch the fight. hendo was wining but was doing no damage. He spent the whole first round doing nothing but putting his hand on andersons mouth and nose and throwing lazy hammer fists to andersons head. The second round was all silva and even when hendo tried he couldnt take silva down.
ALSO hendo is not a finisher. Check his record, he has gone to decision a truckload of times. 17 times to be exact. 7 times in his last 9 fights one finish being his loss to anderson and his Ko win over Wand.
Scientist, dont make me slap the silly out of you. When Anderson wins this fight he will be the fighter with the longest win streak in the history of the UFC with 9 victories. he will also tie the record for Title defenses to 5. He deserves all the hype plus he cant be more classy and nice.

Second round hendo tries to take Silva down because he is hurt after trying to stand and box. Also you have to admit that round one was given to Hendo on the judges score card.
I like Silva and he is good for the sport, but along those same lines I want to see someone actually challenge him, but he just goes through them too easy. Its like how Federer was in tennis for a while, it was a given he was going to win so the real spotlight left him and was focussed on who would be the first to break his streak. Everyone loved him but you watched his matches already knowing the outcome.

Also silva has been training boxing with Freddie roach, he founds he has to better his hands. I cannot imagine how would be a better silva striking wise.
Hendo won the first round by lay and pray.
what do you want Anderson to do, he pretty much cleaned the division. He still has maia and now akiyama could be a great fight for him at least after a couple more fights.

Looking at the people that he's beat I'm really not that impressed, but my major complaint is that alot of people see him as the greatest MMA pound for pound fighter EVER. I can think of several people who could beat him pound for pound that are currently fighting. It's just that he hasn't fought anyone with the right style to beat him, except maybe Henderson but he got impatient and stupid. :shrugs: I think alot of people just like him because he has amazing striking, he's like the motherfucking Ali of Muay Thai, he's so smooth and fluid, but pound for pound I think he would lose to Mir, Fedor, Couture, Minotauro and a handful of other fighters.
I would like to see Silva vs. Bisping. I'm not saying that Silva would lose I would just really like to see that fight.

Man youre cruel, do you want to see bisping die?
about his P4p status the only fair comparison is fedor. I thought you were going to say GSP or Lyoto MAchida but dude Mir Couture and NOg are not P4p best. Couture has lost 9 fights compare him to a guy like GSP that has lost 2 times and avenged every one of his loses is crazy. Couture lost to liddell twice, lost to lesnar. Hes not even close to being top 10 p4p. Mir is also a wild bet. He beat a guy with 1 fight in MMA(lesnar) and a aging minotauro. he lost to brandon "the truth hurts" vera in brutal fashion.
if by saying you think he will lose to them in an actual fight id say there are weightclases for a reason.
we cant keep disagreeing apparently you are a silva hater, im a silva fan. the top 3 p4p is crystal clear, its GSP, Fedor and A. Silva. you can order them anyway you want. Most of MMA websites and mags put silva as #1 though:mrgreen
beating the bests MW of all time the way he did is crazy. He destroyed Rich twice and finished hendo something that has only been done by him and Nog. Give him the props he deserves. Also beat a pancrase champion in Mqquardt(sp) and a world BJJ black belt in lutter.

I mean that if they were all 185 then they would lose to Silva. Couture could take him down and lay and pray. Mir is a bet but if he looks as good as he did against Minotauro then I'd put money on him beating Silva I think he could not get KOed take him down and he has gotten some pretty crazy submissions. Minotauro I think could win again by taking him down and pulling off some crazy submission like he always does.
I don't think that they are p4p better but I think that they could beat him in a p4p match.
I actually like Anderson Silva I love his striking style it's so crisp yet fluid, but I just think that people think that he's alot better than he is. Which still leaves room for him to be really fucking good but he's not #1 p4p all time like alot of people would have you believe.

So pissed with UFC 97. That title fight was the worst display of MMA I have seen since Quarry / Carnes, pathetic.
Wiman / Stout was exciting I really enjoyed it, though I wish the decision would have gone the other way.
Stan / Kryzensky(sp?) Was impressive to watch someone's game exposed like that
SPOILER ALERT
SHOGUN IS BACK, THAT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just skipped to the end rather than waste 15 minutes of my life. That was a horrible, horrible infuriating fight. How the hell did Leites think he was going to win that? I'm going to bed. Adios fellas.

3rd - No action
4th - No action
5th - small exchange two minutes in, Silva actually jumps in Leites butterfly guard, hits him 2-3 times and stands up.

That fight was an embarrassment to UFC and I would say Mr. White isnt going to be very nice to either fighter. But man Leites looked like a little chicken shit girl. He ran from every strike and fell to his back a million times to bait Silva into grappling. If I was Silva the second he stood up I would have layed into him. But he didnt push the fight. He knew there was no fight and that he didnt need to try. The point is, he is too good. There is no one in his weight class that can give him a good fight and some, as Leites showed, are scared of him because of his power. If I was Thales Leites, after the build up for the fight, I would hide my head under a bag when I went out. I understand he uses BJJ and submission tactics, but after Silva forced him to stand for the 50 th time, he should have just grew some balls and fought.

At first I was pissed that Silva didn't knock his head into the third row and really am still a little pissed he didn't punish Leites with some sort of body attacks. After looking at the fight I really put most of the blame on Leites, he was chicken shit and was only falling to his back. I can understand trying that 2 maybe 3 times but after it doesn't work you have to do something else. Yes he would take some damage getting in on Spider but we know that Spider's takedown defense is suspect when compared to other top stars. I saw that Silva was fucking with him, especially the thigh punches and knee stomps. Namely you could tell that he was pissed to, especially when he wouldn't touch gloves with Leites after the fifth time he went to his back.
Luckily Stout/Wiman, and Shogun/Lidell saved the night for me

I feel for Lidell. Man how many has he dropped in a row now? Four? Something like that. He has had a great career really and was a beast. But i dont feel he has it anymore.

He will be a gatekeeper at best, he will never again fight for the title. Dana White has actually come out and said that Chuck will never fight again. How Dana can say this I don't know but that was the official press statement
FYI Chuck has lost 4 out of the last 5 fights.
He will probably be a commentator or representative for the UFC as he is such a franchise fighter and an icon. Then again he may just live his normal life of snorting lines and banging 18 year olds till he dies.

I am all about people pushing forward through disabilities but sometimes you have to face the facts. I commend Kyle Maynard for what he has done, but I really don't think MMA is where his future lies. Its kind of hard to have an effective striking game when you don't have legit limbs.
http://mmajunkie.com/news/14694/maynard-stifled-in-mma-debut-drops-unanimous-decision-at-auburn-fight-night.mma
I personally see it as a disaster waiting to happen. In a world where its an uphill battle to have sanctioned MMA fights, having a congenital amputee beat to hell doesn't send a positive PR image.

So who here trains BJJ/Sub grappling/MMA/whatever martial art that you're into?
I know BB8 has a good bit of BJJ/Judo experience, and I've done a bit of BJJ and am getting back into it now that I have a place to train again. What's up with you guys, and what are you working on?
I'm focuding on my half-guard work just because I end up there alot while escaping from full mount or side control and want to make it a position that I am comfortable fighting from.
Also, I was just looking at the UFC schedule and UFC 104 - Machida vs. Shogun. I haven't seen Shogun's last fight but I heard he looked great again so I hope that will be a good fight, also the headline for 103 is Franklin vs. Belfort, I haven't been able to keep up with MMA as much as I would like to but does that seem like a really weak main event to anyone else?

I started a MMA class about a month ago. The sifu teaches a mix of wing chun, jkd, krav maga and supposedly muay thai. It's a small laid back class perfect for a newcomer like me. I'm really enjoying it.
I'd like to learn BJJ or even Greco Roman; perhaps when I have more experience with what I'm doing.
The_Scientist
12th September 2009, 07:35 PM
Yeah I would totally add some BJJ to that and probably some freestyle or greco-roman wrestling.
Do people fight out of your gym?
I'm just interested to know because that is a really odd combination of martial arts I mean when's the last time you saw a guy fighting MMA doing Wing Chun? I'm interested to know if it works.
There is a guy at my gym that did olympic TKD and he has some of the craziest kicks I have ever seen. I've seen him kick a guy in the head twice before I could even comprehend the first kick. He also parlayed it into the ring, literally put a guy to sleep with a head kick it was one of the craziest most violent things I've ever seen in my entire life.
Also, what is the format of your classes and how much ground work do you guys do?
Apollo
12th September 2009, 11:03 PM
The class is mainly designed to teach street fighting techniques to guys and it's taught at a very basic level. I'm there because the lessons are incredibly cheap and it's a good way to add structure to my life. The instructor trained in wing chun for a long time before branching out to other disciplines but still uses some of the principles of WC in his teaching, ie linear attacks, attacking the centerline, multiple quick strikes, etc. It's very informal training though and we dont have anyone fighting out of the gym yet.
The_Scientist
12th September 2009, 11:34 PM
Awesome, as soon as you get the money you should switch gyms unless you just really like that one, but given that you're listing price as the major benefit of that gym I'm guessing you're not too attached.
The atmosphere in a gym where people are training to compete is awesome. It's like in Rocky 3 when they go to the gym where Apollo Creed explains the eye of the tiger. The first time I walked into my gym I thought I made a huge fucking mistake because everyone there had that look and it scared me a bit no lie, but I went and kept going and earned some respect and now I want more than anything to get that look in my eye.
Also, you can be sure that the training is top notch at least for your area because you can look at records and what not and it shows you how well the techniques work against resisting opponents who are trying to beat the shit out of you.
I agree about the structure it is nice everyday having some place you can go to blow off steam and have fun.
Do you plan on fighting ever?
Apollo
12th September 2009, 11:51 PM
Yeah, I plan on switching gyms if I get more serious about it, but for now this is a good fit for me.
Personally I don't plan on fighting unless it was part of my training/progression. I'm actually applying to med school next year, so I guess I'm the type of person that would rather help someone than fight him. That said, I'm finding that I have a lot of talent when it comes to martial arts, and I do want to be able to defend myself, so martial arts may become a long term hobby as I grow older and leave sports like water polo behind.
The_Scientist
13th September 2009, 01:59 AM
You're like the third med-school type person I know that does MMA.
BB8 does and I'm going to apply after I do some volunteer work after I graduate from college.
I was on the fence about fighting, but I want to have a fight in the next one to two years. It's one of those things that I don't want to die without having done and now is the best time to do it. Early twenties about to be just out of college.
