I'm making a workout log, because they work wonders at keeping me honest, and because you guys give great advice and support. I'll post a definitive schedule probably about Saturday after I get back to school and see what my schedule will be like. Right now, I'm about 5'11 and weigh 212, I like to lift weights alot and do so over the summer and breaks from school, but I'm self consious about working out in front of other people so I avoid gyms and I'm in a dorm so I have to work around his class schedule and mine. I plan on joining a gym to train Martial Arts February first and will probably lift there, once I get to that point. Right now I'm just looking to improve my fitness and cardio which is shitty at best, due to asthma for most of my life. Right now my threshold for running is about a quarter of a mile. So most of my fitness will consist of stretching and running or some variant there of in the morning, bodyweight workouts or whatever I can find to workout during the day like curls with a backpack full of books, and yoga during the day when my roommate isn't in and pushups and situps and the like at night which I don't mind doing in front of people. So, I figure I'll run .25 miles and walk .15 miles continuing for about a half an our tomorrow morning, then I pack and head back to school. Thanks for any advice and support and for keeping me honest.

Here's to kicking ass.

I fucked today up, because I didn't go to sleep until 2, so waking up and 5:30 wasn't an appealing option that early in the morning. Hopefully, I'll be able to get in a regular schedule now that I'm in school.

Alright, because that was a ridiculous amount of shit to post, and no one but me will probably read it. Suffice it to say that it's a bunch of stuff for aerobic/anaerobic fitness with a slight inclination towards functional strength. Which is basicall what I want because I am more or less working out so that when I join a gym I can workout without feeling super insecure or being worried about vomitting. Thanks for reading, please keep me honest.

Nice! Im also glad that Im not the only one who does Yoga. What sweet ass videos you got? We got hot chicks in it? Thats my favorite part of my Yoga X workouts.

The_Scientist
10th January 2009, 04:50 PM
The Yoga Flow series, I came across it and figured why not try it. It seems pretty nice much more relaxed compared to the Yoga X but there are 3 videos Earth -> Water -> Fire. And they get more intense and I've only done the first one, so that will probably change, but I have 3 weeks to get into shape, so it sort of fits 1 video/week.

I like yoga it's fun and it's a good way to develop isometric strength that most excercise programs leave out. And it is relaxing and makes you feel "recharged" or whatever word yuppies use to describe the feeling after a yoga workout.

And hot chicks are a requisite part of yoga videos, along with cheesy music, and usually some videos of nature.

I forgot to post my diet, it consists of 3 meals and 3 snacks, for a total of 1847 calories a day, 37 grams of fat, and 95 grams of protein. I did some stretching and yoga today, because my roommate was out I think I'm going to attempt to wake up tomorrow and run in the morning to get a headstart on my cardio which is seriously lacking. Good luck, and keep doing whatever you're doing.

The_Scientist
14th January 2009, 03:21 AM
Day 2 down, was alot harder.

I didn't run or do the first workout, because I slept in.

But I did do the last big one, and that was enough to kick my ass so I guess I'm ok with it for today, I'm sure I'll find some way to punish myself, I mean make up for what I missed this weekend.

I'm also going to make some goals for the end of the month so I have something to shoot for/measure my progress.

Good night, and good luck.

I keep forgetting to post in this thing. Suffice to say last week started out good and tapered off, overall I give it a C+.

Worked out tonight, very intense, but very awesome. Now, I just need to find out something so ridiculously motivating that I will get out of bed in the morning and run.

For abdominal work might I suggest that you try low-rep, high-tension alternatives to the high-rep burn commonly recommended? Janda situps work great, but if you don't have access to a training partner you can try the "back pressure crunch" from Pavel Tsatsouline's The Naked Warrior.

What you do is lie on your back, take a breath of air into your stomach (diaphragmatic breathing; to learn how to do this, lie on your back and place a shoe or weight plate on your belly button, take a breath in, and the shoe should rise. If your chest rises, you're doing it incorrectly), and push your low back into the ground. Don't "crunch" up, just pressurize your abdomen and force your low back down into the ground.

This drill teaches you how to contract your abdominal in a straight line and is almost a worthwhile exercise in itself.

The_Scientist
21st January 2009, 02:30 AM
Sweet, I've done those before never knowing what they were or that anyone else did them. How many do you do?

Baseballer8
21st January 2009, 02:51 AM
BJJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly I like to roll 5 times a week when school permits and it is the best cardio I have ever done. 30 mins of solid hardcore rolling equals the same calorie output as running 6 miles for me

Where do you train?

Also if you haven't joined yet check to see if your school has a club of some sort. I hardly ever pay for lessons because I get it from the school. I did pay for a week to train with Kurt Pelligrino at Hermes Franca's gym when I was on break last year.

The_Scientist
21st January 2009, 03:01 AM
Nope school does not. But I can roll like 6 times a week plus a shit ton of other classes if I choose to take them and access to a full gym for like 120 a month. It seems pretty awesome and they compete and are reputable, I don't join until February because of cash, but I've wanted to do it for a really long time and am superhyped about it.

Baseballer8
21st January 2009, 03:09 AM
That is a steal for unlimited training. How is that with? Just to give you an example one week at the Armory (Pelligrino's gym) cost $100

The_Scientist
21st January 2009, 03:15 AM
It's associated with Renato Tavares I think.

There's a place here that Soneca teaches at who is apparently very decorated and it's still like 140 a month I think. I guess it's just a good part of being in Ky.

Baseballer8
21st January 2009, 03:26 AM
If it is an actual Tavares school then you are golden. However in BJJ many people will sell their name without giving anything to the school. In my hometown there was a Gracie affiliate but all that meant was they paid the Gracie family a lump sum each year and were allowed to use their name.

There is a Machado school near where I am at right now, and while it is not a primary training center for the Machado brothers, they do come at least once or twice a year.

However all you really need is a purple belt to teach you. Most black belts are so far lost in complex moves and theory they forgot how to relate to the beginner. Black belt instruction is great once you get your feet wet and know what you are doing on the mat, but overkill if you are just learning the basics. Blue belts taught me the basics to arm bar and triangle, a black belt taught me how to finish it 90% of the time.

The_Scientist
21st January 2009, 03:31 AM
No it's actually affiliated with him, he comes about twice a year, and they go down to is school in Florida a couple times a year. There are 3 blackbelts a couple of which actually trained in Brazil I think, I forget their belt lineage, then there's one purple belt, about 10 blues, and probably a shit ton of whites given that it's a decent school.

PepeLePew

What's BJJ and rolling?

Baseballer8
21st January 2009, 05:01 AM
BJJ = Brazillian Jiu jitsu
rolling = Live sparring, but not like a competition so if one person submits you just restart and go again.

Go on you tube and look up the names Ronaldo Jacare Souza, Marcelo Garcia, Damian Maia, or Xande Ribiero and watch some videos.

Yeah, I looked up a picture of the Machado brothers the other day, and they are all solidly built, I was suprised, especially given that Royce is the face of BJJ for alot of people in America, as opposed to his better built brothers like Rickson.

Baseballer8
22nd January 2009, 03:25 AM
Royce is famous because of the first couple of UFC's

The first two or three UFC's were basically an elaborate infomercial for BJJ so they grabbed some of the meanest looking people from the other arts to face off. To make BJJ look even more amazing they took the smallest brother who was the least imposing and placed him in. This way a lot of attention would be garnered as the small guy defeated all these monsters.

If the gracies thought there was going to be any real competition they would have put in Rickson, but he was too in shape and big to garner attention. In fact in Japan Rickson was competing in Vale Tudo.

The_Scientist
22nd January 2009, 03:33 AM
I know, that's why there were no time limits, so that Royce could just lay on people and wait for them to do something, and tap them out. And the first few UFC's were also followed by the Gracie in action series, pitting the gracies against traditional martial artists.

Have you seen Rickson's documentary Choke? I liked it it wasn't great or anything but I liked it.

Baseballer8
22nd January 2009, 03:44 AM
Haven't seen it actually

An interesting one to watch off of bit torrent is Eddie Bravo's "Twister". I chronicles his start in BJJ, the daily life of an elite grappler, all the way to his win over Royler Gracie in ADCC. I liked it because it really showed how the best of the BJJ people out there really have to live in poverty just to pursue their dreams, yet given the choice they would do it over and over again.

The_Scientist
22nd January 2009, 03:47 AM
That does sound good. I appreciate the gracies for what they've done for BJJ, and all but to me they've always seemed a bit arrogant and to a degree profiteering for some reason. I mean they sue their own family for fucks sake.

Baseballer8
22nd January 2009, 04:02 AM
No doubt they are good and they have done leaps and bounds for the sport but their time is limited. They are already divided against each other and the only relations they keep are business. Soon Helio will die and then the Gracie family will plummet into chaos.

The_Scientist
22nd January 2009, 04:06 AM
Agreed, one of my favorite martial arts stories for some reason, is the one in which Kimura a judo practitioner fought Helio Gracie in a match. And to prove judo's superiority Kimura tried to knock Helio unconscious by throwing him on his head. So he kept throwing him on his head, but Helio didn't quit, and he finally submitted him with a shoulderlock, which is why it's now called a Kimura, supposedly.

Baseballer8
22nd January 2009, 04:54 AM
Match was also ridiculously long like 3 hours too. Personally though I believe there were better Judokas than Kimura but Helio had to take on Judo and wasn't going to take on the best.

Granted I am biased towards Judo

The_Scientist
22nd January 2009, 02:28 PM
Yeah, I'm sort of biased the other way. That's just because most of the judo people I know I dislike alot. I would really like to learn it though. I was sort of disheartened when I found out that they didn't teach it at the school I want to join. But they have alot of teachers there. They teach wrestling, MMA, Muay Thai, BJJ (Gi and No Gi) and even Capoeira. All for a pretty cheap price, with reputable instruction. I mean they have their own MMA team and I've seen their fights and youtube videos of the instructors and they seem like nice down to earth guys who just really love what they do, and are really good at it.

Baseballer8
22nd January 2009, 05:07 PM
All honesty wrestling has more practicality in the fight world than Judo. Basically Judo is referred to as Japanese pajama wrestling. It takes a long time to be able to apply what you learn in a gi in judo to no gi. Western wrestling is built around not having a gi. If I ever teach Judo at a black belt level I will have one night a week of no gi judo for the sole fact that it is highly underutilized because most judokas are too purist to rid themselves of the gi. Make sure that you are being taught wrestling from a grappling or MMA perspective because traditional wrestlers are always ending up in guillotines.

Honestly though I wish I had access to a gym like that, damn I would be in there all day every day.

The_Scientist
22nd January 2009, 10:22 PM
Hell yeah, I'm sure I will be, once I get some money. Fucking government making me wait for it and shit.

I agree with you about judo, the only two people I've seen be able to utilize it without a gi are maybe fedor and karo parisyan. But even then it didn't always seem effective. Greco Roman is much better for clinches.

Fuck, all this talk makes me want to go there right now and sign up. I'll probably be ridiculously sore for a month, but also ridiculously happy and probably in great shape.

Baseballer8
22nd January 2009, 10:29 PM
Greco means you aren't allow to shoot. Yeah you will get crazy clinch control, but freestyle and folkstyle wrestling is a lot more fun to watch and also more applicable.

The_Scientist
22nd January 2009, 11:35 PM
I know, they say that they train all three, but I think there is an emphasis on folk/freestyle because of applicability to MMA and that is what the guy who coaches the wrestling was a champion in, and competed in at college.

Collegiate wrestlers can be really good MMA fighters, it just depends on their willingness to adapt. I HATE lay and pray-ers, they irritate me, but hey I guess a win is a win.

Baseballer8
23rd January 2009, 04:09 AM
Sounds like a good deal, my judo coach was a wrestler at the D1 level and he was my size but three times my strength, it was unreal. It was also unreal what he was able to do on the mat. Lay and pray sucks but until you have a wrestler who knows how to keep you pinned and down you don't realize how bad it sucks. I could escape to guard or sweep anyone else in the club but with him it was like a ton of bricks was on me at all time. He was a master of keep his weight on you and making you uncomfortable.

Personally I like GSP's wrestling. His takedowns lately have been sick.

The_Scientist
23rd January 2009, 03:53 PM
Yeah, while I've never experienced it myself. I've seen it alot in MMA. I mean even good jiu jitsu guys alot of times suck on the ground against a wrestler. They just can't do anything, every time they try to create space to do something they can't. It's crazy, it's like they are just extra dense.

Baseballer8
24th January 2009, 04:07 AM
A guy I roll with is 250+ lbs of solid muscle but once I have him in side control or better he is worthless because I am staying heavy and tight on him. That is one of the great things about jits, even when you give up 60 lbs you still have a shot. Then again he tries to do the same to me and well it sucks having 250 on your windpipe

Green ready to test brown in Judo

Blue in bjj - mainly due to my judo background

The_Scientist
25th January 2009, 04:58 AM
Yeah I hear that the correlation in newaza is basically blue BJJ to brown Judo.

I can't wait to get my blue, even though I'm not even in it yet. I think that blue belts are sort of viewed as the entrance to the club, whites come and go. But if you're blue it basically means that you have a good grasp of the basics, you should rule anyone who hasn't studied BJJ on the ground, and you've payed your dues and are sticking with it. I mean most BJJ places divide their classes into whites and everyone else. Which makes sense to me. I think it will be a good day, when I get my white and a great day when I get my blue.

Baseballer8
25th January 2009, 05:27 AM
Royce Gracie once said "The belt only covers one inch of my ass, I have to defend the rest of it"

Once you start going consistently we will notice who you are and you will be assimilated into the program. Classes are usually divided into new people we don't know and those we like. If you are there to learn and train hard day in and day out then the black belts will have no qualm about rolling with you. If you act like a dick and are trying to explode and use strength through everything then you will never get a good sparring partner. My suggestion would be to find one of the advanced belts but not the teacher and kiss his ass in a way that he takes you under his wing. While the instructor has to teach everyone you will get a lot of one on one from your new friend.

The_Scientist
25th January 2009, 05:47 AM
I see, that sounds like really good advice.

What do you mean by kick his ass?

I was basically planning on getting crushed for two months, before I started to learn what I was doing.
Do you mean like cardio wise not giving up, making him work?

The_Scientist
25th January 2009, 05:52 AM
Also, I agree about the belts to me it's just there to hold up some pants.

Baseballer8
25th January 2009, 06:20 AM
Re-read it I said kiSS not kick, basically get chummy with him. Purple belts are to the point where they are good enough to teach but have people in front of them so they never get the glory. When they have a chance to have a pupil who is willing to learn and work they will help you out. If anything so they can prove to the higher ups that they are ready for more responsibility.

At my old Judo club we had our sensei but the higher belts assimilated pupils and taught them on a more one on one basis. We actually got a kick out of a kid from my camp vs my training partner's camp.

The_Scientist
25th January 2009, 06:30 AM
Oh, that's good I was fucking confused. On the other hand I suck at kissing ass, I do like to learn alot though and tend to have a very small ego and ask lots of questions so I think that might do fine instead.

So, over the summer I bought the nike plus system to keep myself motivated to run, but quickly lost interest because it wouldn't allow me to calibrate properly, but I found it recently and looked on the internet and saw that the problems were fixed supposedly. So, I think I'm going to calibrate/use that tomorrow.

I think it will help me run, because I like numbers, figures, the outdoors and competition, and hate treadmills. Here's hoping they resolved their problems.

Does anyone else use the system/what do you think?

Not for running, but on my bike I have a cadance meter and its nice to have some numbers by which you can use to train to a higher level. You mood changes by the day so what is a good workout plan one day feels like shit the next. If you have numbers you can access during the exercise it helps you go into machine mode and crank out the power you need disregarding your mental state. My next purchase will probably a heartrate monitor or if the military gives me a fat sign on bonus, a power meter for my bike.

The_Scientist
2nd February 2009, 03:00 AM
Yeah my dad has a meter of some sort for his bike, he likes to graph all of his stats in excel to keep him motivated.

Baseballer8

The_Scientist
3rd February 2009, 03:32 AM
I doubt it is then, my dad is a very economically minded fellow.

In other news, I'm going to join the MMA gym that I've been wanting to this week, as soon as my money posts to my bank account. I've already picked out a gi that I want to order online, it got really good reviews.

http://www.gorillagear.ca/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=11&products_id=125

There's the link if you want to check it out, it's also the best looking gi I've seen so far, that had a very minor impact on me choosing it though.

Baseballer8
3rd February 2009, 05:04 AM
Honestly I would stay away from colored Gi's right now. They are more of a luxury and aren't allowed in many competitions. If you have any plans whatsoever to ever compete look into either all white or all blue. Construction wise it looks decent but I have never rolled in one. I will tell you that if you are looking at spending that kind of money look into Atama Gi's. They are the best and several of my partners have had theirs for 4+ years. Crappy gi's will last 6 months and cost you more in the long run so make sure you do it right the first go around. $150 is a good price point.

Also just to give you a heads up, the new guy who walks in with a colored gi (other than white or blue) is immediately labeled as a tool, and run through the ringer.

The_Scientist
3rd February 2009, 09:44 AM
Thanks for the advice, I was actually worried about all of those issues, except for the first one I didn't know that they didn't allow them in competition. I chose black just because I figured that it would show less dirt and what not later on. I'll definitely go with white then, because a tool I am not and I definitely don't want to be labeled as one of those annoying people who walk around in board shorts and affliction t shirts and think that they know how to fight just because they watch the UFC, I just want to blend in for a bit and not piss anyone off until I understand what will piss people off and why.

I know that they sell gi's there for like 50ish but my theory was that I wanted a nice one, because I could pay 150 for a gi now but probably not pay that much for a gi later, just because of the way my finances are.

Thanks, I will look into Atama, and white it is.

Do you have any more advice so that I don't do anything else that is stupid, obviously I will but I'd like to keep my mistakes to a minimum.

Baseballer8
3rd February 2009, 02:57 PM
Learn to use technique and not try to power out of things. Technique beats strength 99.99% of the time. Also if you learn based on strength right now you will plateau after about 4 months and really wish you had focused on those escapes and drills. Once I focused on technique my skill set went through the roof.

Watch Marcelo Garcia vs. Xande Ribiero in the absolute division. Hell anything Marcelo will make that point pretty clear.

The_Scientist
3rd February 2009, 08:17 PM
Yeah, I watched the video of Marcelo vs. Ricco in the 2005 ADCC today, and that was impressive, he took his back twice, rarely let him get past his guard and submitted a guy who weighed about 100 pounds more than him.

The_Scientist
3rd February 2009, 10:15 PM
Also I took your advice on the gi's i found an atama goldweave and with a belt and shipping and everything it's going to be 150, but I'm ok with it knowing that it's a good gi and that it will last me a while.

The_Scientist
5th February 2009, 10:19 PM
I ordered an Atama goldweave the other day, isn't it slightly messed up that my gi costs more than a month of lessons. Granted the gi should last quite a while based on all reviews.

FYI Tap early, Tap often, and be gracious in defeat. Also when someone catches you ask what you did wrong 9/10 times they will be more than open to telling you the glaring error you committed. The other time was just the result of a scramble and somehow they ended up there.

Yup, I've resigned myself to getting my ass kicked for the next 3 months but at the same time working my ass off to try and keep that from happening, and learning everything that I can from anyone who will teach me.

I signed up for BJJ today, that was fucking intense, I walked in and got the stare down by everyone but the guy helping me. I'm a bit nervous, just because of the fear of the unknown and what not, but I start tomorrow.

It's the oddest mixture of awesomeness and dread. Oh well, here's to kicking ass.

Sure everyone felt the same way the first time they were starting out. Soon you'll be a vet like them.

Good luck with it.

Yup, it's cool. I'm sure it will be worth it, and nothing was ever won without some sacrifice, and I'm sure my fears are entirely unfounded.

Fuck, apparently when I get somewhat anxious I spit out platitudes.

Also, I just realized that I sounded like a bitch, sorry.

Just got back from Jiu Jitsu, it was ridiculously awesome. Seriously, probably the coolest thing I've ever done on my entire life, no exaggeration.

I love Gina. She is bad ass and undefeated. A lot of fighters in MMA have dissed her because of her sexiness. Too bad she can kick their ass too, so they need to shut it. I mean, she is part of Randy Coture's team. Damn good mentor! Too bad she was with EliteXC. I still have the ESPN piece she did before her first fight on my DVR and love her as Crush. She is hot as hell

Awesome, I'm busy as shit, but after the next couple days it probably won't be so bad. I'm just on here for a second to take a break from studying.
