name your favourites, why and possibly add a little history or sidenotes:
i like a lot of the work of MICHELANGELO Buonarroti
Italian painter, sculptor and architect (b. 1475, Caprese, d. 1564, Roma).

i heard that this woman above sibylis, was beautiful once- she picked up a handful of sand and asked a god whom had taken a liking to her that she wanted to live for as many years as there were grans of sand in her hands- (accepted as 1,000) she was granted this wish but she had forgotten to ask for eternal youth so she aged over 1,000 years until there was nothing left of her but her voice.

Not really into art but philosophy YES! Kant's cool and makes alot of sense. Descartes is a bit of a wanker but his 'i think therefore i am' is cool. Socretes and Plato are obviously good too but some shit like the forms are a bit fucked up :?

Descartes is the geez that said, 'i think, therefore i am' meaning, i think, therefore i exist in some way. Whether its in a dream world or such shit but its an undoubtable truth. One of the only ones, well, i cant think of any others.
The reason Descartes said this is the only undoubtable truth is beacuase of his theory of radical doubt. There are 3 parts to this.
1. Illusions: Which is basically as it sounds. Everything you experience could be an illusion. EG: Optical illusions or when you put a stick in water and it seems to bend :?
2. Dreaming: Which means everything could be a dream and you will never know.
These two parts focus on the physical world and experience but there are still things call 'analytic' truths such as '1+1=2' or 'all bachelors are unmarried'. Y'know, stuff thats true by definition. And so...
3. Evil demon (dont forget its called RADICAL doubt): This means that there COULD be an evil demon telling us that 1+1=2 when it really equals 3. This demon illudes us in many ways and so, we can never really know anything, not even analytical truths.
Now, all of this is possible and cannot be disproved (like God), and so, it can be concluded that nothing can ever be 'known' except that we exist in some way or form.
I might give you a description of Kant, Socretes or Plato's work some other time but not now.

Its not that good learning it in school. You have to learn the exam specification so you can gain a qualification. Its better to study it yourself as then you can look at what interests you in however much depth you like. Then you can learn not what the exam board says you should learn but what you want to know :D

Ok guys, let me draw on the collective knowledge here.
I want to do some in depth studies into ancient and not so ancient civilisations.
I have a local library but wonder if anyone has suggestions of which civilisations of which period/s would be a good start?
I want to see how they worked from the smallest detail to the grandest.

You could also pick up a book describing many ancient civilizations and after you read/browsed through it, after knowing something about each one, you choose the civilization that interests you the most.

I think they screwed up on his little penis when they sculpt him.

How the fuck did they manage to sculpt things like that. Its always amazed me, just the smoothness and detail from relatively simple skills and hours of labour. Can you imagine if you sliped on the face or something

The original David had a shlong.. but the marble kept breaking, and shorter and shorter it became.
Mikey did his best for the poor bastard.

Not entirely on topic.. but.. 'Gothic art' has always sort of weirdred me out.
I've always found the 'demons' in these pictures to be genuinely scarey, more than any modern horror monster/slasher flick has ever pulled off.
Or perhaps disturbing is a better word..

Why the hell are you guys picking on David for the size of hes dick? Some of you know better, but for those that don`t a little explanation:
The sculptures and paintings of naked men in those times purposely altered the natural size of the penis DOWN, they weren`t really that small. The reason being that it was seen as more sophisticated and morally strong if less attention was drawn to it, thus it was made smaller. It`s not like all guys have huge dongs in real life anyway, especially flaccid.
I like the Michaelangelos "David".

Ah, some quotes from my second favourite grumpy bastard.:D
Too bad the third one is thrown around to much these days, it always loses some of its effect with overuse.
