i dunno Matt`s story here obviously- but i had something similar sounding (at least with a blackbelt).
i was at a party when i was about 20- i was much heavier and bigger muscled then. so anyway, this blackbelt guy was really trying it on with a female friend of mine- she was very uneasy so asked me to be her "fake" boyfriend for the night to make him believe that he was wasting hes time so stop.
so anyway, this dude soon saw that we were together (heh, we did a good job :D ) and he kept coming up to me, and following me. he would come up to our table and say stuff about hes blackbelt and hes skills and speed, when me and her got up he wanted to be with her and kept barging in, later i went upstairs to these nasty toilets to take a piss- dude followed me there too. he took a piss too and came up to me as we were leaving and was saying all this dumb shit about how tough he is, how many guys hes beaten and about hes blackbelt blah- totally trying to intimidate me. (it wasnt working) whats more is that i couldnt understand some of whathe was saying and he kept repeating it but he spoke right in my face and hes breathe stunk and he was drunk.
maybe he was some tough blackbelt- but all i could see was a out of shape guy with seriously rank breathe, who was drunk and stumbling over himself here and there. i was like twice hes size (though he much taller), not drunk and capable and happy enough to brawl and drag him around like a sack of potatos blackbelt or no blackbelt.

besides being a blackblet only means so much- a friend of mine is a martial artist, though he never ever boasts and describes himself as "a lover, not a fighter". but he reckons that anyone in the wrong situation canget beat, so that a blackbelt or a high dan can get beaten up by a guy who just knows some streetfighting. ovcourse the odds are in favour of the blackbelt usually but it guarantees you nothing.

so Matt- any dipshit people who boast about theyre fighting skills just look them dead in the eyes and tell `em youre a lover, not a fighter. :cool

I always thought that black belt types were trained for self-defense, rather than for ass-kicking. True, they could probably beat someone up if they wanted to, but aren't supposed to be thinking that way.

In other words, they're not supposed to be the one starting the fight.

Having a black belt in something doesn't mean one would necessarily be calm and wise, but training until getting one takes so much dicipline that usually people with one aren't the most aggressive ones, unless they're drunk or something.
