Ok, Bobo has decided what to do during his summer holidays. I'll rent a kayak, take only my knife, tent, sleeping bag, matches, frying pan/kettle and my crazy mind with me. I can't eat fish so that will add some more spices and resistance to the trip. It would be better without the tent but I want to change camp every day and have no time to build anything... no need to go overboard. There is plenty of stuff to eat in the woods, and I'm one sorry ass wimp if I can't stay out there for two weeks. That's exactly what I need now... no expensive hotels and fancy meals, only me and the wilderness. I'll take my cellphone with me just for emergencies, but I'll keep it shut off if nothing bad happens. Can't wait to get out there... but I'll have to wait until July. :x
Any ideas, hints, tips, stories, experiences to share?! Discuss...

Why can't you eat fish? Allergy????
I was thinking of doing the same thing only we have no wilderness out here.
Only some small woods with dirty old men flashing there bananas. :x
Last summer I went with a moped to Paris. I had a hell of a good time, especially when on the busy roads leading to Paris. Its such a thrill to ride with such a small vehicle among those big cars. Dangerous but fun!
First we wanted to camp in the wilderness, but a friend of mine convinced me it was too dangerous because all the evil people out there. So we stayed on campings.
One day I want to camp in the wilderness, catch my own food, cook it. Do everything myself.

My tent is a simple and cheap thing for two persons, but I'll be going alone. I'm going in mid July... The route will be around a group of big lakes that are connected to others by rivers... 100's of kilometers of clean wilderness out there. I'll take a good waterproof map and my compass too, don't want to get lost out there. I won't plan any ready route, I'll just go where my nose points.

julys good. i may be well home by then (depending on various stuff inc funds, health, ect) but i may also not be..
what kind of knife you gonna bring?
i cant bring one cos id get arrested at the airport for carrying an offensive weapon :x so i guess its *on site procurement* or whatever, same with tent i think.
i tried a tent very recently-got in (i grew up making tents, tents out of anything and evrything, multi roomed ect) but i felt pretty weird in it this time, like trapped/vulnerable. hmm)

sounds awesome!
i hear you and sweden and norway have many many lakes.
what compass do you reccomend? i ordered a military lensatic compass.
i like the canvas inner and outer skin tents, but personally i cant take one cos its a weight issue carrying one of those around.

Why can't you eat fish? Allergy????
Yep, that. I may not have it anymore but haven't been in the tests yet... But, there will be loads of stuff to eat: mushrooms, berries, some of the leaves and young coniferous branches... more than enough to eat. I have eaten ant eggs too but I propably won't want to destroy their nests. Catching a rabbit or something would be cool too but I may be too soft-hearted to kill anything that innocent, and catching it would burn more energy than eating it would give.

16th May 2005, 06:56 PM
that sux about the fish allergy.
that diet sounds a little light no?
young corniferous branches? you can eat those?
you could make a bow and arrow like arnie in predator and shoot a few birds, just make suire they crap on you first then you can claim self defense/revenge.
*jokes* no, but really
Bobo
16th May 2005, 06:58 PM
Yep, those branches taste like soap but they're quite nutritious. My diet without fish will be quite light, but those berries for example will give me every vitamin I need. I may go to the allergy test before my holidays, ability to eat fish would make everything much easier. I know how to catch fish. My diet will suck but it'll keep me alive for two weeks. If I'd be going there for one full year then I should worry about my diet more.

Finland is called "the land of thousand lakes" for a reason. Actually, we have over 190.000 lakes in Finland... Here's a map of the area I'll most propably be going to:

Bobo

Is it the land of a billion mosquitos too?
Yes, but that's no problem really... a good campfire keeps them away + the tent is mosquito free if one closes the zipper fast enough. Much more mosquitos in the northern parts of Finland, central parts (where I'm going) isn't that bad. It's all part of the experience, it isn't even supposed to be easy.

Thanks for the warning, I won't eat crap, believe me. I'm well aware of everything in the finnish forests, not many dangers there, a bear or two maybe but nothing worse than that.
