The girl I was with thought it was wierd at first, but she was mostly concerned that I had a problem with it. I'm around six feet tall, do one-armed pushups/pullups, and have a nice sixpack. It's really not that big of a factor for me personally but when I think about it I see quite a few guys my age (20 or so) that are taller, and a fair number that are my height or shorter. I'm interested to see how it turns out though because my grandad and my late uncle were both average height until 22-23, and my grandad ended at 6.3 and my uncle at 6.5.

The girl I was with was about my height, maybe a little shorter, but it depended on the shoes she was wearing. The only time she was clearly a bit taller was with highheels, and then it wasn't anything too extreme.

Why don't you use cm as a method of height measurement?

5'11 is [5'11'' = 5 x 12 + 11 = 71''. So the answer is: 71 x 2.54 = 180.34cm].

If you are 180cm tall you're actually 5' 10.9", and not 5'11". If you are 182cm, it means 5' 11.7" and not 6'... and so on.

I don't like the scale of feet for height measurement because it's too inaccurate. There are 3.2cm difference between 5'11" and 6'.

I'm totally familiarized with inches, feet, pounds, stones, etc... but I still think that, in orther to get an accurate measurement, you need to go into fractions of figures too often. Because people can't be bothered with the division of those figures, they approximate. Metric values in cm are undoubtely simpler and clearly understandable for the average person. I'm, for ex., 180cm tall, but I say 5'11" because it's the most approximate value in feet, although I know it's less than that. But, as you said, it's a matter of culture.
