So, my Norway trek is over, and I almost lost my life there. The guys who were supposed to bring me more supplies on week 2 didn't show up, and I ended up walking for a full week with almost nothing to eat in a fucking blizzard! Fell off a cliff (too tired to be careful enough) and hurt my leg badly. I walked for 90km alone in a fuckin' snowstorm from the mountains with a bad leg, lost 5kg (11lbs) of weight, got bad frost bites on two fingers and my leg is swollen to the size of a football + I have a big cut on my right shin and it's badly infected. I also lost a tooth when falling off the cliff. The only thing that kept me going was anger.

Firstly welcome back!!

Man that sucks. I'd be livid if "friends" had done that to me. Good thing is that you're still here to tell the tale. Get some rest and then seek medical attention at the earliest opportunity.

Hope you have a speedy recovery.

So, my Norway trek is over, and I almost lost my life there.

But you didn`t, you are a hell of a tough Suomi man, you are too damn valuable to lose to nature- or (irresponsibility) of man like that.

The guys who were supposed to bring me more supplies on week 2 didn't show up,

what happened to them? Did you have any communications with them post their rendevous time?

and I ended up walking for a full week with almost nothing to eat in a fucking blizzard! that would`ve killed a lot of human beings, man, a week..how the hell did you sleep? If at all? Hunger, pain, anger and what, guts and determination but jeez, that`s no joke.

Fell off a cliff (too tired to be careful enough) and hurt my leg badly. That could`ve killed you huh, man.

I walked for 90km alone in a fuckin' snowstorm from the mountains with a bad leg, lost 5kg (11lbs) of weight,

what can I say??

got bad frost bites on two fingers and my leg is swollen to the size of a football + I have a big cut on my right shin and it's badly infected. I also lost a tooth when falling off the cliff. The only thing that kept me going was anger.

As I said, shitty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man, so where are you now? In hospital? Do you have any help now? Are you being treated for the wounds???

They will pay for this.
..glad I`m not them..

I wish you well as soon as possible, damn, maybe you wont be back for a while to reply and let us know your current status??

luv,

Funny you should say that. I mugged a couple of Norweigans the other week but all they had was a bit of food.

I'm feeling very weak and have some high fever, so I'm going to the hospital today. The cut on the leg must be threated because of the infection and they'll propably take some x-rays of my swollen leg. Well, I have never broken any bones and I don't think I did this time either, but something broke and it must be checked out. I'm also propably somewhat malnourished and my stomach is a mess so I haven't been able to eat much, so maybe they'll do something about that too. My finger is very badly infected too, I just punctured it with a needle and some weird stuff bursted out of it, eeewwww.

Those "friends" that failed me were just some trekkers I met in Nepal. We had agreed about everything with detail so there shouldn't have been any misunderstandings, and I emphasized the fact that the supply pack would be essential. We agreed that I climb this certain mountain a few days before their arrival to receive text messages from them in which they were supposed to inform me about their arrival (the only place there where a cellphone works). For safety reasons we agreed the date so that if they can't get there I'd have enough food left to survive out from there alone. I should have left the first day when I got no messages from them but... well, it's always easy to say afterwards. I climbed the peak three days in a row to wait for messages but they never came. I also tried to call them but there was no answer.

I wasted too much time trusting that they'd come, and my food supplies were too low for the return trip. I would have been ok if I wouldn't have hurt my leg, but it made me so slow that the rest of my food supplies were inadequate big time.

Now that I have calmed down a bit I'm quite worried about the guys. The weather out there was very rough and if they weren't as experienced as they said, they could be in trouble (IF they're there). But the message they were supposed to send (in any case) shouldn't have been a problem because they were supposed to send it from a city, not from the wilderness. If I can't contact them soon, I may have to report them missing. But, because they sent no message I have no way of knowing wether they're out there or not. A difficult situation.

If it turns out that they simply left me there with no intention of ever coming, then they're in big trouble. And what I learned from this adventure is: never trust strangers on important matters like this. It's a wonder I'm still alive, because it got extremely rough... I was so tired I couldn't walk straight, and the terrain was very rocky and the weather was cold and stormy.

But, I'm quite proud of my achievement because I know not just anyone could have made it out from there. I'm a badass, that I am! :cool Proud of himself Bobo is. :mrgreen

To the hospital Bobo goes... in a few days we'll talk more.

Well you are alive and that is what counts. Also good call by going to the doctor and I pray that the fingers don't have gangrene otherwise you will lose some or all of them. You are correct in that you must learn who can be trusted with matters such as this, just too much to risk. Also I see that you still have some compassion left in you as you have not passed judgement on them, since you don't know what conditions surround them. Good luck and Godspeed to your healing process.

BTW Mooman are you an old CC fella like myself from a couple of years back?

Geez Bobo man, I whine about feeling depressed, well Dad's homebrew wine fixed that right quick, wish I wasn't on a non-voluntary weed sabbatical though:x

Oh well, bobe's, you've learnt a lesson I've loined long ago, only trust yourself, you are the only one you can depend on when the going gets rough.
You made it home, you depended on yourself to get there, despite failings from others, wether intentional or not.
Good luck with your cold dilapitated bod.

I leave for you a few comics from my website (another shameless plug) I hope it helps.

Bobo
24th September 2006, 12:37 PM
Ok, I'm back from the hospital. Because of my high fever and the infections they kept me there for two nights, gave me some strong antibiotics and cleaned the wounds. I also received some fluids to the vein (don't know the english word for that... transfusion?) because of my dehydration and malnutrition. The x-rays showed no bone damage so the myth about my strong bones continues... just some kind of rupture in the soft tissues. Two weeks of rest and walking with the sticks is my sentence, and after that I'm hoping I'll be in good enough shape to continue to India.

The doctor was quite amazed about the distance I had managed to walk with the leg... and I told him it isn't about pain, it's what's between one's ears that counts in a situation like that. It's no place to whine about pain, it's a situation where You must have some attitude. Whining is for losers, and in situations like this, losers die.

It's a small town and I'm not sure who talked to who, but a reporter from a local newspaper came to visit me in the hospital. I hate publicity so I agreed to a short interview only if they keep my name and pic out of it. Not a big deal, my guess is it's going to be a few lines at the edge of some page. They love these survival stories it seems...

Oh, about my fingers... it was a bad infection in my middle finger on the right hand, propably from a frost bite. They punctured it and cleaned it, and the antibiotics should take care of the rest. Lost the fingernail but it'll grow back. So no permanent damage.... only the tooth but my insurance will cover fixing it.

I did have good enough gear for the weather but it was the river crossings that gave the frost bites. The water was cold as hell (about 1-2 celsius (~33-34F) and at some places I had to go balls deep in the strong cold stream to get over it, and the rocks on the bottom were so slippery it took me several minutes to get across the rivers. I had good hiking shoes and they warmed up my toes pretty quickly but my fingers were exposed to the cold for longer periods of time and that's what did the damage.

I managed to contact the guys who failed me and they gave me some stupid explanation about confusing the week they were supposed to come there... I'm pretty sure they were lying and the reason why they didn't come was the difficult weather. What a bunch of wimps. I have promised myself not to use violence anymore so I called the dogs to forget about this. Yes, when I was angry and tired I arranged some "education" to the guys who failed me but that wouldn't solve anything. They did sound shocked about what happened to me and I'm sure they meant no harm, their lack of experience only blocked them from seeing the seriousness of their action. They didn't understand how rough it can get out there. I suggested them to forget all about trekking in the wilderness, they just don't have what it takes.

So, Bobo is back for at least two weeks and then I'm hoping I'll be able to continue my traveling. Nice to be back, nice to be alive.

The Big Banana
24th September 2006, 12:49 PM
Its great to see that youre fine and on the road to recovery. If I was you I would kick those two guys arses anyway, they nearly cost you your life. Violence doesnt solve anything but I bet it'll make you feel a whole lot better.

Bobo
24th September 2006, 01:11 PM
Nah, I have some gang background with lots of stupid violence, and what I learned there was: revenge doesn't make You feel any better. What I do these days is this: learn from the experience and find the good things about the situation... and from this adventure I gained some valuable experience about survival which may save my life some day + I feel pretty damn proud of myself being able to get out from there alive. And finally this: the wimps lost a good and valuable friend, and they will suffer wether they know about it or not.

Negative thoughts made me extremely depressed a few years back and today I try to avoid them. I may sound like a hypocrite but I want to be able to look at myself in the mirror, and releasing the dogs on those wimps definately wouldn't make me feel any better, only worried about them. So no, I will do no such thing. This was a good experience now that I know there was no permanent damage to my body, and I wouldn't change it for anything. In a way, I'm thankful for what they did. I experienced something I wouldn't be able to arrange myself, and I learned alot about myself out there. A good thing this was. May sound weird but that's the way I feel about it now.

Welcome back Bobo.

It is refreshing to see a man who can draw positives from an adverse situation. You are most correct in what you are saying. Events in our lives are designed to teach us lessons and until those lessons are learned these events have a habit of repeating themselves, all the while increasing in their severity. It is good that you have been able to put your anger aside, for it is of no worth. You will gain far more satisfaction, not to mention understanding, by dealing with things in this manner.

Speedy recovery man:lol:

Bobo
24th September 2006, 01:53 PM
Just look at the headlines today: the whole planet revolves around anger and revenge. It doesn't offer any solutions, only pain and suffering. If only people would learn not to fight violence with violence and this planet of ours would be a better place for everyone. Violence and revenge ends only when everyone's died, and only intelligent diplomacy can find true and lasting solutions. Anger and revenge are primitive reactions.

K-man
24th September 2006, 02:00 PM
I can see more and more why you are held in such high regard around here.

It's strange that the world has not evolved to the point where they (world leaders) van see the glaringly obvious. I mean, if the likes of you and I can see that violence solves nothing why cant they??

So much for evolution of the species. I sometimes wonder (well quite often actually)!

Bobo
24th September 2006, 02:22 PM
People think too highly of homo sapiens sapiens. We hide behind religions, inventions and money, raising ourselves on pedestals we don't deserve, while our planet is in chaos. We're intelligent enough to invent fancy things, but too stupid or greedy to deal with the consequences. We're nowhere near the level of intelligent evolution than we think (or hope) we are.

Likely one of those adventures you can tell the grand kids about. One of those things that sticks with you.

It's like this time I was leading a group of kids on an orienteering exercise and become "momentarily confused" and took 30 kids up the wrong mountain. Man when I discouvered that, my heart was just pounding, 30 kids between 13 and 16 years of age and on the wrong mountain.

I worked it out and got everybody back safely, but that experience has stayed with me and will continue to remind me to be cool under high pressure situations.

Bobo
24th September 2006, 04:53 PM
It's funny how most of our modern world inventions aim at making our lives more easy and comfortable, while the REAL memories worth remembering often come from the bad or difficult experiences. We really only learn from our mistakes and bad times, so in a way the comfy things in our lives block us from learning. Life shouldn't be too easy or it takes all the spices out of it.
