Do have headphones to listen to music?

I've got a question: I'm wondering how people with a classical background (like you) react to this (http://www.myspace.com/mansellclint song: Lux Aeterna)
Do you find it cheesy, boring are do you like it?

I don't yet know what to make of it. There are fragments of motives which I don't think are well connected.

Lux Aeterna is Latin for Eternal Light and it's always used as a movement for a Requiem (like Mozart's Requiem - Lux Aeterna). It's supposed to convey hope and believe in a superior being which is benevolent and merciful, therefore the music should contain this character (hope in the eternal light). I don't think this song conveys that, it's a bit confusing. Perhaps this guy, Clint Mansell, managed to convey some of it in the transition from the opening with the pan flute stuff to the simple and somewhat sincere guitar solo (which is a nice moment) but the rest just doesn't make much sense.

The song with the panflute is the first song: Together we will live.
But I'm talking about the fourth song called Lux Aeterna.

Perhaps it wasn't a pan flute, but the sound is quite similar, I'm referring to the intro of this song 'Lux Aeterna'.

Valk

But the guitar you talked about is from the first song.

Lux Aeterna only has violins.

zwmusic

Hang on... we're not talking about the same song then, but that was the track I heard and the title was Lux Aeterna. Weird. I have a look in the link again.

You have four songs to choose from. The first song (with the flute and guitar) starts to play automaticly. TO listen to the others songs, you have to click on them first.

My apologies, I was listening to the wrong track assuming it was Lux Aeterna. Day dreaming yesterday...

Right, Lux Aeterna (sorry for being plain honest) sucks. It lacks character, it's a minimalistic boring motive and the violin line is just terrible. Surely this one has got absolutely nothing to do with 'Lux Aeterna'. Could be damnation in the hell of boredom.

Valk

Really? It thought that track was terrible.

On Lux Aeterna: I like the beginning as a build-up but unfortunately it leads to nothing and just ends up repeating itself. And that furious violin line is indeed cringe-worthy.
But I still liked to beginning motive.:D

Really? It thought that track was terrible.

Of course not! I was just joking.

But you know, the beginning (Lux Aeterna) became such a chiche build-up, loads of people use this bass line as build-up line. But I think you can do something much better with it than Clint Mansell.

And how about something like this? (http://youtube.com/watch?v=lmCqKq1kCtc&search=%22pyramid%20song%22)

zwmusic
3rd August 2006, 03:51 PM
Crazy. It's a bit nauseating. The brake up syncopated line by the piano moves in fifths and it's a blatant copy of flamenco music... dunno about it...

Valk
3rd August 2006, 03:52 PM
And when the drum enters?

zwmusic
3rd August 2006, 04:23 PM
It's Okay, but one would assume that it should lead to something different, perhaps a theme 'B' or a development of the theme, but it lags on the same pattern and that's when it gets a bit tiresome.

Valk

You're not easily pleased are you?

What kind of popular music do you like?

zwmusic
3rd August 2006, 04:28 PM
I passionately love Jazz. But it's not really considered pop music, is it?

Valk
3rd August 2006, 04:31 PM
Not really, atleast if you dont mean Jamie Cullum.

What kind of jazz? Bigband, bebop, modal jazz?

zwmusic
3rd August 2006, 04:35 PM
Modal Jazz is my favourite: dorian, dorian with chromatic leading note, pentatonic, etc...

Valk
3rd August 2006, 04:39 PM
Can you recommend me some good albums?
I've got a couple of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock,John Coltrane and Charles Mingus but nothing more.

zwmusic

Try The Jazz Cruzaders: Live at the Lighthouse. Also Bruce Palmer: The Cicle is Complete, fantastic Bass playing.

Valk
4th August 2006, 02:45 PM
I liked the Cruzaders but Bruce Palmer couldnt set my heart on fire. It just sounds like noodling to me. I'm sure I'm missing something but I dont care.

zwmusic

Noodling...

Valk
4th August 2006, 02:58 PM
Are laughing because of the world noodling or because of my incapability to see his genius?

zwmusic
4th August 2006, 03:00 PM
Both...

No, just the word noodling. It sounds funny in this context because it's true.

Valk
4th August 2006, 03:08 PM
I'm a more song/structure/emotion kind of guy and am not often impressed by technical capabilities. The music has to convey emotion and I dont care if that is done by a simple bass motive or by a furious violin solo. Its all about context.

We talk the same language.

Have you heard Moto Perpetuo by Paganini?

Valk
4th August 2006, 04:59 PM
No, (just as I have heard, seen and felt too little great works of art)

Is it good?

zwmusic
4th August 2006, 05:04 PM
It's mind-boggling. I'll see if I can find a link or burn a CD to show it to you.

I've found some samples of fantastic violin playing for you Valk.

1. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000J67F/sr=1-9/qid=1154723807/ref=sr_1_9/102-9930096-0964139?ie=UTF8&s=music

For Paganini's Moto Perpetuo (or Perpetuum Mobile) click on the sample 19. No. 18 is also great.

Michael Rabin died more than 30 years ago, but his recordings are amonst the very best.

Another one which is worth listening is Itzhak Perlman. He also recorded Paganini's Moto Perpetuo, but you may like his Zapateado (no. 18) and the Flight of the Bumble-Bee (no. 5).

Do you like spanish guitar? Then listen to Leyenda from Suite Espanola (no. 13)

I liked Moto Perpetuo sample no. 18. Great intensity. But I didnt find sample no. 19 that special.:puke: For me it misses a few things that sample 18 didnt miss.

Those other two are two beautiful, well, known peaces. Leyenda is great.

Some things I like:

Wagner symphony #4
Tchaikovski symphony #6
Gorecki #4: Utterly depressing but beautifull
Le Sacre du printemps from Stravinky

And I love the pianoscapes of Debussy. I'm a bit of a sensuous, romantic fool.

I know what you mean. The problem with Paganini's Perpetuum Mobile (sample 19) is that it is actually ten times more difficult than the other. Do you know why? it's more exposed and any... any mistake will throw you completely. There's only one violinist in history who had the courage to play it as fast a an evil. That was Ruggiero Ricci, but there's no way I can find his recording.
