Well, can't give any sensational hints here. Variety is the key, do loads of different kind of exercises with different weights. For example biceps: use all three of these: palms up, palms down and thumbs up ("hammer") -grips. Do at least 3-5 sets in total (reps 6-15) and the last 1-2 sets to failure. Vary the tempo too, sometimes hold the weight up for a moment and let it down slowly. The same rules with triceps too. The latest thing that I've been doing is train them only once every week, but really strain them then, feels good (been doing that only for 2-3 weeks now but it seems to do the trick). Remember to take Your proteins... Arginine and Ornithine seem to have been the key to success in my case.

Yes, I got a simple advice: Train your Triceps and train it hard.
The triceps are 2/3 of the arms muscle so to make your arms bigger really put emphasis on them. Most people have a Bicep-fetish and think the bicep is what makes their arms big.

hugh g rection
18th November 2005, 06:10 PM
Yep, people get obsessed with their biceps and overtrain them all the time. The tricep is where the real arm size comes from. Your biceps are one of the smallest muscles in your upper body yet people train them harder than their backs.

Well, they're still toothpicks but its heading in the right direction. I think the key is hitting the triceps as hard as possible.

Valk

I posted a bunch of info in the "17 inch GUNS" thread.

I train about 4 times in 8 days. It depends.

Workout 1: SHOULDERS, CHEST: Military, Bench, Side laterals and I finish off with some lying laterals and some push-ups.

Workout 2: LEGS, TRAPS: Front Squats, Romanian Deadlifts, Ham Glute raises, shrugs

Workout 3: BICEPS, TRICEPS: Close Grip Dumbell Presses (I love this one), SkullCrushers, Barbell Curls, Hammer Curls.

Workout 4: BACK: Deadlifts, 1 Arm Dumbell Rows, Shrugs.

3/4 sets per exercise, 8 reps.

I'm concentrating on getting stronger.

Those are flex measurements.

I'm 6'4" 230 lbs or so.. just starting to get back into shape.

It's hard to get the intensity back.. working out is lame until you can convince yourself that it's not.. I'm just at the point now where I'm starting to get a little aggression back in the gym. Up until now, I've just been dragging my ass in and out of the gym.

As I mentioned, my best shape was when I was into hardcore mountain biking.. I was a tight 220 or so.. never felt better in my life. No weights, just cycling until I was totally spent.. and then I'd stretch and do some situps and pushups.

Sigh, I miss those daze.. It seems like such an undertaking to try to get back into that kind of conditioning. You really have to enjoy the excersise alot.

How old are you?

You know that first step back into it is the HARDEST, but once you`ve dived right in it feels good.
What`s stopping you starting a new chapter in your fitness life? Sounds like you were in awesome shape.

Whats worth investing in more than your own health? Nothing.

C`mon. If you start riding your mountain bike maybe I will too. (Used to ride it around everyday up until a few years ago- now it just sits in my shed being bored.)

I'm currently 34.

About the bike.. when I first moved to Toronto, I had a wee small bachelor pad.. I had to keep my bike on the balcony. It was damn cold.. which ruined the seals of my suspension fork. It won't hold pressure anymore. Those damn forks are ridiculously overpriced... and hard to replace, and dangerous to ride when busted like this. The fork is too spongey, so not only does it bottom out all the time, it will also compress when I apply the breaks (my weight goes forward, shocks go down). Not only that, but since they're so soft.. when I go to pull up my front end to get over some obstacle, I have a good 2" of slack I have to pull out of first.. totally unresponsive front end now.. big drag.

So, as a result.. my Kona Nunu sits collecting dirt.. It's a drag too, because this new home I have has some half decent routes nearby. I reckon I will get back into sooner than later. I was pretty dedicated to some running last year. I live close to where I work, and I can run into work (about 5 Km). Running in is nice, realising you have no wheels, and now you have to run HOME, kinda sucks..

Anyhoo.. you're right.. your health is something that shouldn't be taken for granted. Living life in a healthy body is much more enjoyable on so many levels.

25th March 2006, 08:36 PM

Now 13.8" flexed.

I had a very physical demanding job for a few months which was too straining to continue my workouts. As a result my arms shrunk as fast as my dick when seeing your mother-in-law. 13" toothpicks were the result.
But now I back with a vengeance!!!

Baseballer8
23rd September 2006, 11:45 PM
Shroom switch it to a fixed fork and you should be able to alleviate all those problems. The front suspension is nice but real men don't need them :P or are too cheap to spring for them.

I'd rather not post it in public because I actually compete so my name is out there and its not that hard to locate.

Post up your goals, your calorie intake, and your routine though in any thread and let me know and I'd be glad to help you out though.

The staples of my routine are pretty basic. I deadlift, bench, and squat every week.

I have a heavy bench day and a lighter one where I usually do speed work and more accessory work in the form of isolation movements. I do some compound row movement twice a week as well on my bench days.

Most of my arm size comes from lots of tricep work, but everynow and then I'll thrown in a set of bicep curls if I feel like it.

Let me know if you want specifics, I'll give you a link to my journal in private. Peace.

28th January 2007, 11:01 PM
How many days a week are you in the gym, monkeyman?

Monkeyman
28th January 2007, 11:22 PM
I'm in the gym 4 times a week.

Here's an example of something I would do as a workout + workout cycle. I usually listen to my body and plan accordingly based on calorie intake, stress, etc.

3 week loading/1 week deloading

First three weeks I will gradually increase total volume based on total reps and weight while increasing intensity and decreasing total reps. This means that I add more volume to accessory lifts as I take away volume from my main lifts in order to keep placing additional stress on my body even when I'm decreasing volume in my main lifts.

When I deload, I cut volume to about 60% of the last workout I did and I cut intensity to about 60-70% of my max.

This is just basic linear periodization so that I don't get burnt out.

Example of an upperbody workout:

Bench: Work up to a daily 3 Rep max, drop down for rep work in 8-15 rep range for 3-4 sets.

Compound Lat Movement(rows, pullups, etc.): 3 sets of 10 reps

Tricep accessory work(pulldowns, extensions, etc.): 2 sets of 15-25 reps

Light cuff work to keep my shoulders healthy and some bicep curls if I feel like it usually finishes my workouts.

This is just an example of what I would do on any given day, but my routine is not simply based on a few weeks. I plan my cycles around meets so at any given time things could change based on if I'm cutting, bulking, or any other circumstance.

17 inches Flexed Cold. Hope to fit the gym again in thrre weeks, messed up my shoulder going to hard to long one work out. I usually need 6 weeks off after I tweek my shoulder, learned that the hard way three years ago. Never go back to early is my motto now. Until then I am trying to stay lean with some cardio and lower body lifting.

Bootyhound
23rd March 2007, 01:21 AM
Must be something about age, I'm the same way. Start trying push the 400 envelope on bench and always fuck myself up seems like the past 2 years.

So I always tweek it when I go too heavy for any more than 3 weeks, like you, now I focus more on trying to get lean and pumped.

I suppose once I lay off for I while I'll go heavy for a few weeks at a time.

Right now, uphill wind sprints 10 50 yarders, after a 2 mile hard run.

Abs, cardio, and a couple of days I pump it to keep solid.

I tell ya though, those fuckin' wind sprints give me a sweet pump and my lungs are like a hot air ballon right now.

I have to say my shoulder has been feeling good for a week now. It is so tempting to jump back into things, I have to keep telling myself step away from the weights. Old habits die hard. I have it in my head that I want to change my whole routine around. As well as goals. I truelly want to be just strong and lean, rather then bulky and powerfull. If it is one thing I have learned at my age fighting off weight is harder then gaining it.

Bootyhound
23rd March 2007, 02:21 PM
Exactly, thats why I'm trying to be as lean as possible for now, because it will be even harder later. You can still put on muscle w/ lighter weights.

Plus just like anything else, if you change the workout get cut, mix in some rotator cuff rehab. You will be ready to go heavy again and throw up some weight.

You know for years of pumping and not focusing on rotater cuff and shit like that your bound to tear some shit down.

Just need to build it back up w/ some rehab, get in shape.

Shit my goal was to fuckin' press 500, and get my vert up to 37", and fuckin' go to the NFL combine, now I say shit maybe I'm not built for that shit, too old.

I'd rather make my dick huge for when that fresh 20 year old snatch wants take the Houndog for a test ride.

I am the just the oppisite in my mind anyway. I had the typical runners body throughout high school and college, tried like hell to play college baseball. But it was not to be. I used to beable to make up lack of abilty with hard work, you know the blood sweat and tears routine. If the guy to your right was giving 95% everyday I had to give 100% every second, every throw, every at bat, every play. Just after a while the guys around me were just better atheletes then there 90% was just as good as my 100%. If not better. Not a sad story, just the truth. At the time it made me depressed, now I know that my 100% was not really 100%, I could of spent my free time in the weightroom, improving my sprint times, take more BP, work on arm strength, etc., etc.

Just recieved my favorite work out magazine, and would you believe that the issue is basiclly a bunch of body weight only movements. Something I have been researching online now for two weeks now trying to find a decent workout. Saves me a bunch of nonsense. At least with the first go round. Let you know if I like the workouts.

Some people are just mentally tough as well, I'm not talking about hardass mentally tough. Just intangibles, enthusiasm, just being secure with yourself.

Coaches always like that stuff, I was always hard nose but at the time, I could have really of had an edge if I had that swagger, where you aren't overconfident or cocky...

but you look like you know what your doing.

Kind of controlling your evironment, like Larry Bird, or Tom Brady.

Mental attitude goes a long way in life, how you look at yourself. Self respect, I am still trying to figure it out but I'm getting close.

15 inches flexed bicep after workout... had a long break and started again 7-10 weeks ago.

Haven't seen this thread for ages.

Haven't been to the gym in at least 3 and 1/2 years. Just measured flexed(cold as it can be):

15"

Unflexed 12.9"

I used to be about at least 0.5" bigger... time to lift some iron again, I guess.

We're in equal biceps terms, Matt.

16" but thats after an arm workout, so I'm really 15.5",

I can't gain shit for arm size, any ideas...

I usually do like 6-9 sets on bi's and about 6 sets after chest for tri's.

I am thinking of switching my training split to incorperate bi's and tri's together to get the super pump, and do chest and back together....

sometimes I wonder if I just did less sets 3 x's a week for like 2 weeks would that wake them up, I would really like 1" more and I would be happy in the arm size department.

Rum_Runner
11th March 2008, 08:55 PM
Booty I would not even focus on arms as much. Depends on your lifting schedule and time I would spend more time on heavier lifts less reps and definitely due bi's and tri's the same day. I have totally changed my workout schedule because I am looking to drop fat weight while trying to gain more strength as well as power. If in the end it means smaller muscles so be it, I am looking for efficiency now that I am getting older rather then mass and size. I will gladly take mass in size in the cock department otherwise I am good.

That's the thing with shorter people, they have shorter limbs so they look bigger than someone that's taller. Tall people have to have more mass to look equally as big.

Yea, that was 6 or 7 years ago though, but even at that, yes 4 or 5 inches. But when I cut, I'm sure my numbers will go down some. It'd be nice to replace fat with muscle, but I don't really see that happening.

Yeah, I am not really trying to increase my muscles' size as much as I am trying to get ripped. IMO my muscles already look disproportionately large compared to my stature, and personally, that is not the look I am going for.

Regarding your comment, I think it would make more sense to have the circumference measurements expressed as a percentage of height. Ie inches in circumference divided by hight in inches.
So, flexed, I would score 12.5 / 64 = 0.195, or 19.5%
