View Full Version : New 64 bit computer

I bought a new computer today... Pentium 4 640 with that ht shit. Right now, I can't notice any difference between this and my old system, in fact the old system felt faster.

Can anybody sell me on the advantages of this 64bit shit now that I have bought it? (I need to back up an emotional purchasing decision with rationality).

Fuck... lol. I just put this in general pe... sorry. I'd better learn how to move threads and fast.

Please don't say it's from BS World again!?

Until there's a 64bit version of Windows you'll hardly notice anything.

Sorry Valk

Are you going to spank me?  :D :D :D :o :o :D :D :D

I got it from Aldi.

Oh, there isn't a 64bit Pentium BTW. :cool

Or maybe there is - I'm off to check on this.

Aaah ok I was ripped off then. It says on the box, 64bit technology to support your future needs. I presumed it was a 64bit processor.

Are you talking about the AMD Athlon 64? Cause that's what I have.

But don't ask me what the advantages are. I dont know much about computer hardware.

If you want me to, then NO.
If you dont want me to, then YES.

Apparently there is, so the box is right.

It is important to note that the EM64T technology has nothing to do with the 64-bit technology used by the Itanium processors, called IA-64. 32-bit software runs without any problem in these new processors as well.

The main advantage of the 64-bit technology is making your CPU to see more RAM memory. The processors without this technology can access up to 4 GB of RAM, while the new 64-bit Penitum 4 can access up to 32 TB of RAM

The performance gain depends on the application. Accordingly to Intel, this gain varies from 2% to 7%

It is time for buying the new 64-bit Pentium 4? Only if you are a geek that wants to have a 64-bit ready computer for when the Windows 64 is released. For the average user, it is better wait.

Better get that RAM upgraded. :P

I quess that settles it. Matt, you're a geek.

 2-7%... wow fuckin wee.

Still, I only paid £750 for the whole system and i must say, it does look sexy.

1 gig 400mhz ddr ram
320 gb harddrive sata
16x dvd writer etc etc

There is a new version of windows coming out in 2006 and its supposed to be as much of a revolution to winxp as winXP was to win98 - I beleive the new version is 64bit. Thats what I read anyway. From what i read it is very radical to what we use now. ie 3d technology, new and advanced file system, the best file search system ever known and so on. The project is called Longhorn and I just found some pics of it (very early stage so it may not look like this when finished): http://www.activewin.com/screenshots/longhorn/

I believe the G4 and G5 Mac processors are 64 bit. Have been for sometime now.

My porn collection is bordering on an illness.

A 200gb illness, that is!

I'm seeing my GP on Friday about it.

Nah, he moonlights as a hard drive salesman. I'm gonna see about getting a 3 tb beast! I believe it's called the SmutMaster 1200.

64bit systems will be ok in 1-2 years when programmers start using its benefits, but right now You won't get much advantage out of it compared to 32bit systems. I will wait until some 64bit software starts appearing, the processors will be cheaper then too. For a regular geek like me, my 2,8GHz P4 + Radeon 9800XT are more than enough for now, I hardly play games anymore. Processor speed doesn't play too big role for a regular gamer anymore, most of the hard work is done by the graphics card these days. Unless You do some serious calculating (CAD, pic editing etc. etc.) You won't benefit much from the new CPU, well maybe some MP3 converting might feel faster. For gaming, a good graphics card like X800XT or similar will speed up Your computer much more than the CPU.

I believe the Adobe products make use of 64 bit architecture. That's more intensive, as you mentioned.

that may be the case but I don't think the mac processors were 64 Bit until the G5. And even so, Like you said, Programmers aren't utilizing 64 bit quite yet(As far as what's on the shelf at Best buy and crap)

but I have a bad feeling about this. Is it possible that we're gonna have a bunch of Bug factories pumping out shady software for a while? I don't know much about bit processing but I know that my advanced programs are buggy as hell at times. I hope it gets no worse.
